This is our elementary-based program for students in PreK4-6 th grade. Students are grouped in
multi-grade classes within specific age ranges to encourage the modeling of leadership and teamwork. Explorations students explore the subjects of math, science, history, Latin, English grammar, and geography on a 4-year cycle. They also work to memorize hymns, scripture, and a timeline of world history each year. Explorations students are encouraged to participate in our Explorers Expedition awards program, which encourages the quarterly and annual memorization of memory work by subject. In addition to memory work, students have the opportunity to participate in science experiments and presentations, and fine arts classes. Review time and weekly presentations help students to develop their rhetoric skills and demonstrate each week’s learning in front of their peer group.
For students in 3rd-6th grade, a more formal study of the English language and writing skills
begins, extending our weekly community day to a full day. In the afternoon Fundamentals program, students study the fundamentals of English grammar, learn how to write with excellence, and practice important math skills. The students are split into two groups, Fundamentals A & B. Fundamentals A is for beginning students (3rd and 4th graders) and Fundamentals B is for our more experienced students (5th and 6th graders). The Fundamentals B class culminates each year with a “Faces of History” Presentation that aligns with the morning Explorations program’s history era, combining the skills they are learning in history, writing, and grammar, as well as presentation skills for a truly classical integration of what students have learned.
Beginning in 7th grade, students enter the rigorous Connections program, which includes the
areas of Logic, Rhetoric, Science, Literature, and History. In this program, students put the skills they have learned to work as they begin to take personal responsibility for their learning and explore themes and concepts on a higher level of cognition. Students are encouraged to engage actively in conversations around each of the subject areas, which are carefully cultivated by grade level to meet state requirements for graduation and to prepare students for whatever profession they may select in the future. From debate on social and legal issues to essays on character and the importance of historical events for our world today, students are prepared to engage culture in a well-rounded and thoughtful manner. Students explore the scientific method through hands-on scientific experiments, learn the intricacies of the American court system through a Mock Trial experience, and demonstrate their knowledge of economics through the development of a career portfolio.
